Prior to sheltering-in-place, it was rare that my nails were ever seen bare (sans polish). My manicure frequently displayed line art, dramatic 3D stickers and rhinestones, or a rainbow of alternating colors. But while having to fend for myself when nail salons closed, I really got into prioritizing the health of my nails. I began wearing less colored polish to minimize the discolored yellow-ish tint, and most importantly, I started filing my nails more regularly. But rather than using the standard emery board, I swapped for a glass nail file — and my nails have never looked (or felt) better.

For the uninitiated, there are two main filing options for your nails: glass or emery. A glass nail file (also known as a crystal nail file) is a thermal-tempered, chemically-etched glass that buffs your nails down. “Made with fine particles of glass that is less damaging to natural nails, this file ‘seals’ the nails [meaning the smooth edge has no cracks] as it files, ” says Syreeta Aaron, LeChat Nails Educator. “It is best on natural nails and for keeping the keratin intact within our natural nail.”

Suzanne Shade, founder of at-home nail kit company, Bare Hands, adds that the fine texture of these files gently abrade the nail edge, which means less trauma or damage for your nails. She also makes a polisher that buffs the nail bed to create a high shine finish.

What Are Glass Nail Files

“When our nails chip or break, not only can it be very painful, but it can potentially damage the structure underneath the nail, ” says Dr. Orit Markowitz, board-certified NYC dermatologist. “If there's enough repeated trauma that impacts the nail bed proper, which is what the nail grows on top of, it can be irreversible. So it is important that when our nails are being groomed, or manicured, we’re utilizing tools (like glass nail files) that are less likely to harm that nail bed.”

If you’re someone dealing with chronically weak and brittle nails, this simple swap might be the easiest first step to repairing that damage. However, the benefits don’t stop there.

The most obvious difference between a glass and emery board nail file is the material itself. An emery board (the nail files you usually see at a nail salon) is a paper file with a thin layer of foam between the two grits (the abrasive paper). But while these options are generally cheaper and more common, they aren’t exactly the safest choice for your nails. “These larger granular files can damage the pores and structure within the nail, making the nail more susceptible to developing a nail fungus, ” says Dr. Markowitz.

Glass Nail File Large

The two also differ in how you can use them. “A glass nail file can be used in multiple directions, whereas an emery board can cause breakage if used in several directions — leaving nails more prone to splitting and breaking, ” Aaron tells TZR. And because glass nail files have finer abrasion, they are better suited (and more gentle) on natural nails. A 180 nail grit file (typical of glass nail files) is what you should look out for when shopping. For gels or acrylics, where the nails are a bit thicker, Shade suggests opting for an emery board for coarser filing.

Even though the texture of glass nail files are finer, they are extremely effective at shaping. “The glass will serve to seal the free edge of the nail, ” says Shade. “When doing a rough shape, you can use the file back and forth across the edge. But when finishing, use in only one direction to keep the ‘mesh’ of the nail keratin from fraying.”

Although glass files tend to be more the expensive option, they do have the added benefit of lasting much longer than an emery board. “Glass nail files last longer because of the material, the durability, and the fact that it can be sterilized and disinfected and reused over and over, ” says Shade.

Are Nail Wraps Bad For Your Nails? The Truth Revealed…

Depending on how often you use it and how well you take care of it, crystal nail files can last up to six months before you need to replace them. “When the nail file is not in use, it is always best to put it in its protective case to avoid breakage, ” Aaron tells TZR. To clean the nail file, place it underwater with a bit of soap to remove debris and gently sweep the surface with a brush or a sponge. Then pat dry to avoid trapping dust onto the file.

Unlike emery boards, where the paper can peel up at the edges, glass nail files don’t absorb anything, so there is no need to sterilize it further or after use. But if you share the file or would like to deep clean it, Aaron suggests using alcohol or antiseptic spray periodically.

Types Of Nail File And Which Is Best?

“Crystal nail files tend to be a bit more gentle and work well for brittle, weak nails, but in most cases a good 'ol emery board should be your file of choice, ” says Mary Lennon, the president and founder of Côte.

Sarah Gibson Tuttle, the CEO & founder of Olive & June, agrees. “Crystal files can be a great option for anyone who needs a softer file, but they often wear out quickly and lack the type of grit most people generally need, ” she explains. “Our favorite file is a paper file (AKA emery board) with a thin layer of foam in between with two different [emery paper] grits: one for everyday mani use and one for pedis and/or breaking up the top layer of gel for removal.

"We use these files in our salons and swear by them. Paper files (like the one included in Olive & June’s The K.I.T. Kit, $26) have the right amount of impact—you want your files to do the last 10 percent of the shaping work after you cut your nails 90 percent of the way—and they last [a long time].”

How To File Nails Safely So They Don't Break Or Peel

Whether you choose a crystal or emery board nail file, one rule remains the same: you should swap them out every few months. We're taking the time to point this out because some nail files tout themselves as "forever files" which simply isn't hygienic.

To play it safe, most nail techs will tell you to toss your file every three months if you use it daily. If, however, you're more of a once-a-week maintenance kind of gal, you can hold onto it for up to six months.

Crystal or classic, Lennon wants you to remember this: "File in one direction as opposed to sawing back and forth.” This is key, as filing back and forth can cause you to accidentally buff off too much of your tip, not to mention thin out the keratin.

It is a relatively small shop (3 manicure stations and 1 pedicure) compared to what I'm used to in the States, but they certainly know their business. Efficient and very well done pedicure. Would have gotten a manicure but there was a decent queue, so I'll go back for that next time. What I did see were regular customers with beautifully done nails - something easily seen to trust their quality. She continues right on along with her little blog catch up. I’m tellin’ ya now, by SUMMER, she (yes I mean me) WILL be caught up and back on track with all of these blog posts. That means you’ll be getting so many thrown at you as I go on publishing sprees, but you act like you would hate that. All of the nail posts coming at you!

And the very essential starting point for the catch up: we gotta finish up these spring collection posts. After this we’ll only have Zoya to talk about (who notoriously releases their seasonal shades far after the others). That one will be coming along soon, just you wait. But now, in this post, we’re looking at the only other spring release left un-blogged from our pal Essie!

Now Essie has been on a spree of releasing like 16 collections a year – yes, I do have LOTS of Essie posts on the way to the blog. And among those 900 collections we still have the 4 seasonal releases. SO today we’re looking at their Spring 2022 collection!

Essie Nail Polish Collection

This is a release of the typical 6 shades, all in a more muted, and neutral color palette. It’s a softer, quieter release for spring, and you know I’m not mad at it. There’s a spring collection for everyone out there. I grabbed these shades from Target, though they’re also available through Beyond Polish for a touch of a discount!

Up first we have ‘Sing Songbird Along’, a pale yellow cream shade with an almost touch of gray-green to it. A touch different from a normal butter yellow shade.

This was pretty well opaque in just 2 coats, though on my very ridged nails I could have used a 3rd on a couple of nails to smooth it out even more. But I think most will be good with just 3. Super smooth and lovely to paint on, as you can see in the video swatch.

Essie High Class Affair Nail Polish Review

Next up is ‘Well-Nested Energy’. This is a light, peachy-toned neutral cream shade. Definitely more peachy on me and my cool-undertones particularly, but this is one that can look different on all different skin tones. So as always – this is just what it looks like on me!

This had a streaky 1st coat, but was pretty well opaque with a 2nd coat. Depending on your application you might need a 3rd to smooth it all out, but I was good with just 2.

‘Flight of Fantasy’ has been a favorite of the bunch, and I’m sure you can see why. I mean, of course it’s my favorite. This is a light blue cream shade, with just a touch of green undertones to it. It’s also a little more muted so of course I love it even more.

Expressie Nail Polish Review

Next up is ‘Spring Awakening’, a warm peachy toned, almost rosy cream shade. Another shade that can change depending on your skin tone – this can look more pink or more yellow-toned. I had a few streaks and patches on the 1st coat, but they were all easily smoothed out with a 2nd.

Another favorite, I’m always a sucker for a light purpley-pink shade. This is ‘Stretch Your Wings’, and it’s an almost rosy shade, with all of those purple undertones running through. It’s so soft, so delicate, so lovely.

Again a touch more sheer and streaky on the 1st coat, but easily smoothed and covered and made opaque with a 2nd coat.

Review: Essie Gel Couture Polish

And last but certainly not least, we have ‘Keep Branching Out’, a light, warm-toned almost sandy brown cream shade. This had a super easy 2 coat formula, and I had no complaints here!

And that’s the collection! A different color palette from other spring releases we’ve seen, this one is for the muted, neutral and easy nail polish lover in all of us. Great for little breaks from bright, loud polishes if you ever need them. Overall I had no issues with formulas, with most of these being easy 2 coat-ers. They were smooth and nice to paint on, and if any of these catch your eye, they’re a great option!

Franish: Beauty Tuesday: Essie Gel Couture Review

All Tied Up is described on Essie's website as a 'rustic bronze', however it's a definitely warm, dusky, rose colour. And I love it. Suspended in the gorgeous hue are tons of teeny gold glitter particles which they say are 'subtle'. In person, it's more.. non-existent, which I'm not upset about. It's not garish or lurid, just the perfect, every-situation colour that's been on my nails for weeks.

Summit Of Style is a beautiful topcoat with a lotttt of golden glitter of different sizes. It only takes a couple of coats to build near opacity, so Essie aren't scrooges unlike some cheaper glitter polishes. I love the tone of gold in this one; it's not too canary yellow, not too pale and silvery, but just right. #Goldilocks

A Cut Above is a Luxeffects, glitter topcoat in a pinky hue, much like it's golden-bronze cousin. Again, it takes little effort to build up the glitter, and I like grading this one on the tips of my nails for a bit of a glitter ombre.

Essie Gel Couture Collection Review And Swatches By Nail Lacquer Uk

My favourite ever polish, Chanel's Malice, was unfortunately limited edition, but Essie's Thigh High is (thank you babyyyy Jesus) a pretty good dupe! A deep, dark, metallic red, I fully preempt wearing this all of winter.

Skirting The Issue is really quite like Chanel's Rouge Noir, and has a far better finish and formula than other dupes I've tried. This creamy, slick finish goes on beautifully and the garnet red tone is to die for. I actually think it shows up a a fair bit lighter in my photo/good lighting than in person but either way I'm in.

And just a head's up, you can save yourself some bucks by getting your polishes discounted at places like TKMaxx or Fragrance Direct, (yippee!) or of course use your Boots points.Earlier this year, Essie expanded its catalogue with a whole new line of polishes that promise a "one-step color and shine" that dries within a minute. Currently available in 40 shades (depending on your location), the Essie Expressie Quick Dry Nail Color (C$9.99 for 10 ml) definitely piques my interest as I hate waiting for nail polish to dry. Essie Mint Candy Apple Nail Polish Review

Before I delve into the formulation, it's worth noting that the Essie Expressie Quick Dry Nail Color features a new packaging. The taller and slimmer bottle holds 10 ml of polish while the classic Essie bottle offers 13 ml; despite this, both cost the same at C$9.99. Additionally, Essie Expressie comes with a special angled brush intended to make it easier to apply the polish with your non-dominant hand. Quite honestly, though, the angled design is so subtle that I did not notice it until I read about it on the online product description. Therefore, I'm not sure if it's really a significant update.

Designed as an all-in-one nail polish (no base coat or topcoat needed), the Essie Expressie Quick Dry Nail Polish boasts a one-minute drying time. I tested out two shades and while both are creamy and pigmented, I did not notice a big difference in drying time, as compared to the regular Essie polishes. After approximately 15 minutes, the polish definitely sets but the finish is still prone to dents and nicks, which are what I struggle with most when doing manicures in a hurry. So, therefore, the new formulation doesn't quite stand to its one-minute dry time claim. Regardless though, I would still recommend the polishes as the pigmentation does seem better and the color selection is quite sophisticated yet trendy. In terms of longevity, the Expressie formulation doesn't differ much from the original so however many days you get with the original, expect the same with this quick-dry version. A muted rose cream, this is a beautiful shade of pink for those that may not usually love pink polishes. The formulation is very pigmented and even. I used two coats for the swatches above.
